An Appreciation of…Harold Ramis (1944 – 2014)

One of the most consistently genius but tragically underrated players in comedy has sadly died at the age of 69.

Harold Ramis is the man behind Groundhog Day, one of the most iconic and beloved comedies of all time, and one that revolutionised what comedy can go and to which limits it can go, and which boundaries could be broken. Along with Groundhog DayRamis also directed the first film in the National Lampoon Vacation series, the incredibly iconic golf comedy Caddyshack, the black comedy The Ice Harvest and both Analyze This and Analyze That

However, Ramis also was a beloved actor, having been a part of the Second City. But most people know Ramis from his role as the brilliant Dr. Egon Spengler in the Ghostbusters film – like the other three Ghostbusters castmembers, Ramis helped revolutionize comedy, and his performance in that timeless film will be remembered for years to come.

Here are seven essential films that Harold Ramis either acted in or directed that you should check out if you haven’t already:

  1. Ghostbusters
  2. Groundhog Day
  3. Analyze This and Analyze That
  4. National Lampoon’s Vacation
  5. Caddyshack
  6. As Good As It Gets
  7. Club Paradise

Sadly, Ramis was frequently underrated, and unfortunately he is only truly adored amongst comedy nerds. But his films are timeless and incredibly watchable, and he will be missed incredibly.
