“Certainly a promising film, but a bit more of a homage to Hitch’s visual style would have been welcome. Also, the Ed Gein scenes were terrible, but these are otherwise quibbles in a delicious light entertainment the master himself would enjoy. Especially commendable is the context put into the story, making what would otherwise be a niche subject (the making of a movie) accessible and even compelling. The performances could not be faulted-Dame Helen Mirren cannot do any wrong at this stage, and old Tony captures the somewhat nasty and aloof spirit of the Master well. Add in LOTS of Apocrypha, and you’ve got a lovely little (poisoned?) cake for cinephiles to cut into that even the unconverted can enjoy”
