Oz: The Great and Powerful (2013)

2When I saw the trailer for this film I thought it would be one of the most magnificent films of the year. James Franco, who is so talented, playing the Wizard of Oz. Supporting parts by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams seem even better. Added to it all is the fact that it was directed by Sam Raimi

However, it wasn’t great. It wasn’t magnificent. It was below average. There were a few issues I came across:

  • First of all, James Franco was hugely miscast. He isn’t wizard-like at all. He felt very forced and false, which is a shame because he has had so many more noble performances.
  • Secondly, Mila Kunis becomes a contender for “Good Actress, Horrible Performance” She brings in one of her worst performances in history
  • The story was little more than cute. It didn’t reach the heights it should have considering the subject matter
  • It had some very, very poor writing

However, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz were absolutely fantastic and give great performances.

In the end it was an average film. Nothing special about the acting or story. The special effects are utterly beautiful, which basically carried this mediocre film
