There are many biopics being made in the last decade that lead their characters into little more than caricatures of the people they are supposed to be portraying. Hitchcock is not one of them. It boasts Sir Anthony Hopkins and Dame Helen Mirren as the leads, and uses their skills very well. Hopkins is insanely likeable as Hitchcock, and Mirren is incredibly convincing as Alma Reville. There is an excellent supporting cast – James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins was sublime, and Scarlett Johansson was actually likeable. Michael Stuhlbarg was also very dedicated to the role he was given.
The direction was smooth and the production design was excellent. The amount of detail put into every aspect of this film was shocking. Sacha Gervasi is clearly a director we should watch out for, because if Hitchcock is anything to say about his talent – its that he has it in heaps.
Hitchcock is one of the best films of the year
